Meet the team – Zain Ali

Meet the team – Zain Ali

Zain Ali, a one-year placement student from Sheffield Hallam Uni, joined the team here at British Rema in July 2023 with the hope of gaining direct experience of working with a heritage British manufacturer.

As Zain’s placement year of a BEng Hon Chemical Engineering, Zain was actively seeking on-the-job experience with a company in a sector relevant to his degree and British Rema was very happy to support this ambition.  Andrew Green, Process Engineering Manager, was keen to offer work experience to a student studying for a relevant degree and Zain fitted the bill perfectly;

“British Rema approached Sheffield Hallam University to take on a placement student to help support our Quality and Laboratory function with a few short-term projects. The benefit of taking on a placement student rather than employing someone on a temporary contract has proved significantly beneficial to British Rema. His dedication and give it a go attitude are just what was needed to get these tasks across the line. Zain has mixed with staff from shop floor level through to the boardroom brilliantly”

Over the last year, Zain has primarily worked for the Processing business at the Chesterfield facility; spending time in a number of departments and working with a number of personnel over the course of his placement. He’s gained fantastic experience in the main production/processing area; understanding the equipment, customer requirements, the processes and the general flow of product/material through the facility.

He’s also spent time in the Product Laboratory and Quality Control departments where samples of product are analysed for size and consistency against required specification. His stint in the Process Equipment and Rotary Engineering businesses included visiting customers and understanding the applications for the equipment manufactured.

As he plans his return to university in September, Zain believes he has gained unparalleled experience in the workplace which has really helped him understand how he can put his degree to the best use;

“I have had a great year with British Rema and really appreciate the insight into the industry it has given me. Working across several areas of the business I have gained a real appreciation for how a company is run, as well as a good all-round understanding of the equipment, production processes, quality control, product analysis and packaging/despatch.

I have met some great people whilst at British Rema and I look forward to staying in touch and hopefully returning after completing my degree.”

Outside of work and studies Zain plays football in his local midweek 5-a-side league, reads and plays the keyboard. He is also an avid traveller and is looking forward to spending more time abroad.

The team at British Rema has thoroughly enjoyed working with Zain and wish him all the best for his return to university and successful completion of his degree.

“We look forward to hearing more from Zain and how his career unfolds.”

Rotary Kiln Training for CRH Europe

Rotary Kiln training for CRH Europe

British Rema Rotary Engineering recently provided Mechanical Maintenance of Rotary Kiln training to delegates from CRH Europe at their Moravacem plant in Serbia.

19 delegates from 8 CRH plants located across Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Serbia, and Spain came together at their Moravacem plant for the classroom and onsite training.

Centralised, one location training, not only reduces costs but also provides the ability for engineers to share experiences and ideas between their colleagues and respective plants.

Subject areas covered during the training included daily maintenance, walkround inspections, shell condition & ovality, tyres & rollers, kiln alignment methodology and roller adjustment & skewing.

Overall, the event was a great success and provided the delegates with an insight into kiln maintenance theory and best practices, arming them with thoughts and ideas to implement into their everyday maintenance routines.

A big thank you to all involved from CRH and Moravacem for making this event happen and providing wonderful facilities and kind hospitality throughout.

If you believe your maintenance teams would benefit from similar training then please get in touch at rotaryknowhow@britishrema.com

Posted on: April 25th, 2024 by Anne Bellagha

Jon Hall wins Newcomer Award at SHAPA Industry Awards 2024

Congratulations to our own Jon Hall for being nominated and winning the Newcomer Award 2024 at the Solids Handling and Processing Association (SHAPA) AGM & Awards event on Wednesday 17th April 2024 at the Maritime Museum, Liverpool.

The Newcomer Award is awarded to an individual who has contributed to a member company/organisation or developed significantly in the field of bulk solids handling, contribution(s) in areas such as sales, design, innovation, apprenticeship or further studies that has/have greatly benefited themselves, their company or organisation.

SHAPA posted the following on Linkedin following the event….

Industry Newcomer Award WINNER: Jon Hall – British Rema Processing, Equipment & Rotary Engineering “After studying Mechanical Engineering, Jon joined British Rema in April 2022 as a Sales Engineer. As Jon was new to the industry, he was initially supporting the commercial manager at the time and after only 8-months his mentor announced it was time to retire, and despite Jon only being in his mid-twenties, he took on the challenge. In addition, Jon has also taken responsibility for some of the installation and commissioning of projects and has also signed up to study Chemical Engineering at Hallam University.”

Tony Goodwin, Group Managing Director of British Rema Group commented….

“Jon is a very popular character, not only around the office and within British Rema but with the many customers he has dealt with since his appointment in 2022. Jon has demonstrated, enthusiasm, dedication, professionalism, and responsibility to the task and at the same time has brought new and exciting ideas on how we drive the business forward.”

The whole team at British Rema Group congratulates Jon on this well-deserved achievement.

Can maintenance training help you to bridge the skills gap?

Posted on: February 13th, 2024 by brAdmin

Sir Richard Branson once said, “Train people well enough so they can leave.  Treat them well enough so they don’t want to”.

The pressure is increasing on chemical and mineral processors to train their young apprentices, retain and internally promote existing mechanical technicians and replace the older generation of expert engineers to extend the life of their existing equipment, increase machine availability and meet with exacting production targets.

Our customers in asset maintenance, equipment reliability and maintenance management talk to British Rema’s rotary engineering team about how to look after and motivate their preventive maintenance teams.

One of our most long-standing customers in the cement sector told us:

“Many of the staff in our maintenance team are approaching retirement age, and we have also recently restructured our business. We will be using engineers from other disciplines from existing operations who have static equipment and therefore zero experience of rotating kilns and coolers. We need these guys to understand the basics of rotary equipment fast, as well as helping our newest technicians to learn more so that they can progress within the company”.

Due to the emerging gap between experienced mechanical engineers, technicians and fitters about to retire and those just joining as apprentices or replacing staff from existing teams. British Rema Rotary Engineering is being increasingly asked to run in-house and public training seminars for many of the world’s most well-known chemical and mineral material processing companies.

Our senior qualified mechanical engineers specialise in maintenance, repair and overhaul of multi-station kilns, dryers, coolers, drums and reaction vessels.

The team has first-hand experience of the many issues that can arise from a lack of understanding of rotary vessel operation gained by working in a huge number of sectors on a variety of processes and are qualified to instruct on the basic theory of inspection and trouble-shooting and best practice preventive maintenance planning.

“Inspection of vessel condition is the key”, commented British Rema Rotary Engineering Ltd’s Sales Manager, Robert Fellows, who boasts many years of experience in the processing industries. Robert also has significant equipment installation and repair projects experience as well as process equipment commissioning, and the supervision of ongoing maintenance contracts for key account customers.

“Maintenance staff need to understand the basic theory as well as the practice behind what to look out for under normal machine operating conditions. A planned, informed  and methodical approach to regular maintenance is a must and our engineers can teach basic principles, routines and methodologies to optimise preventive maintenance on a daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual basis,” he added.
